______________________________________________________________________________
This is the city of science -- Academy City, located at the west of Tokyo. It’s technology is said to be 20 to 30 years more advanced than the modern days. Most of it’s residents are students, and some of them are espers -- people who have supernatural abilities. They are ranked from Level 1 to Level 5, with Level 5 being the strongest, and there are only 7 people who are ranked there. Two of them are in the City’s most prestigious school -- Tokiwadai Middle School. And yet, one of them are “infamous” for....
... I didn’t expect this since I entered Tokiwadai.
Outside, the birds were doing their job as usual -- chirping melodiously, feeding their young -- but what about the inside?
The morning breeze blew gently against the curtains into the Tokiwadai Boys’ Dorm. The sun was up and shining.
Without a warning, the annoying sound of the electronic alarm clock sounded lonely in the silence of sleep. The 4 boys were sleeping soundly in their individual double decker beds, cuddling with their bolsters and pillows and whatnot.
The alarm clock continued to ring. The red and black-haired boy yawned, reluctantly pulling his hands, hitting the snooze button with a thud. His face was on his pillow. Soon, he felt something wet and slimy on it -- his drool -- and he instantly propped himself up, realising it was morning.
The other boys woke up from the noise. The red and black-haired boy took a glance at his alarm clock -- 9AM. His eyes immediately widened in alert.
“IT’S 9AM NOW YOU IDIOTS! WHO RESET MY ALARM CLOCK AGAIN?!!” He shouted ferociously, with sparks of electricity surrounding his head.
Kagami Taiga, the “Railgun”. One of the Level 5s in Academy City, and the third strongest. Currently in Tokiwadai Middle School.
“9AM?!” The green-haired boy and the yellow-haired boy shouted. “WE’RE THAT LATE?!”
Midorima Shintarou and Kise Ryota -- even though they’re Level 0s, they got into Tokiwadai using their grades.
“Ah, Kagami-kun, I was playing with your new alarm clock yesterday, and I accidentally--” The light blue-haired boy’s voice was interrupted by Kagami’s electric sparks.
Kuroko Tetsuya, Level 4 Teleporter. Seems to be in love with Kagami...
“I’M PRETTY SURE YOU ACCIDENTALLY TELEPORTED A SCREW OUT OF THE ALARM! Now it’s messed up! Argh!”
“Let’s not worry about that, we should change quickly and run to our classrooms!” Kise suggested the obvious, with a sweat dropping from his head.
“I’m going first!” Midorima wore his glasses, sprinting towards the bathroom. His bed was closest to it, so it was a clear victory.
“Midorimacchi! That’s unfair!” Kise protested, second to sprint.
Kuroko teleported himself and Kagami, placing themselves in front of Kise. “We’re in front,” Kuroko said.
“You guys are so mean~! You used teleportation, Kurokocchi! That’s even MORE unfair!”
“Well, at least we won’t have to be like 30 minutes late! Classes have started already!” Kagami frantically reached out for his toothbrush.
They were all in front of the sink, fighting for a space to stand in.
“Oi! Kagamicchi, stop blocking me!” Kise said, his voice muffled with toothpaste foam as he tried to shove Kagami away.
“Dang it!” Kagami said as he felt a force pulling him away. “At this rate, we’ll really be 30 minutes late!”
“Don’t worry, Kagami-kun, we have my teleportation,” Kuroko winked.
“And you can count on my running speed, Kise,” Midorima assured.
They were late by almost 30 minutes.
Kuroko and Kagami appeared out of nowhere slightly in front of the classroom door, scaring the teacher. “K-Kuroko, K-Kagami.. please appear more normally. AND YOU’RE LATE!” The teacher pointed at them. “AND WHERE’S KISE AND MIDORIMA?!”
“Yossha!” Midorima said, shoving open the classroom door, his hand still holding onto Kise’s jacket coat. Kise was as pale as a ghost though. Midorima smiled, giving a thumbs up. “We’re 29 minutes late! Not bad, though!”
The teacher exploded. He fainted, muttering to himself, “The 4 of them again!! My blood vessels are exploding!”
“S-Sensei!” Kagami went to support the teacher up. “Are you okay?!”
“No, he’s not. He’s going to rest in PIECES,” Kuroko added oil to the fire, smiling gleefully to himself.
“WHY IS LIFE SO UNFAIR THAT I HAVE TO TEACH THESE FREAKING STUDENTS?!!”
“Does anyone not care about me here?!” Kise cried.
The whole class watched in exasperation, for they knew well about the 4 of them.
‘Infamous’ -- which means, famous in the WRONG way. This single word totally describes the ‘Infamous 4’ -- Kuroko, Kagami, Kise and Midorima -- and they’re also the school’s most hated yet funny group. And they’re the most popular too. It might not be a coincidence that the ‘Infamous 4’ are sharing the same room...
“Forget it...” the teacher facepalmed and sighed. “Get into your seats now. We’re having esper abilities test today. Kuroko, Kagami, and the rest of you, you’re in it. Kise and Midorima, treat it as a free period.”
The 4 of them went to their seats at the back. Kagami was beside the window, Kuroko was beside him, followed by Kise and Midorima.
And for some reason, the ‘Infamous 4’ has a fanclub.... the girls from their school.
During class, the girls were passing paper around. (as usual, it’s about the ‘Infamous 4’) And it finally got to Kagami. He shot an exasperated look when he saw it.
Girl 1: Hey, what do you think if the 4 of them played basketball? It’d be cool!
Girl 2: I think Kuroko’s physical ability is too weak. (laugh)
Girl 3: Really? He can just teleport the balls, you know.
Girl 4: Dunks would suit Kagami... and maybe Kise too!
Girl 5: And I’m guessing Midorima would be a good shooter. (laugh)
Girl 6: We should totally have a bet on Kuroko + Kagami vs Kise + Midorima. Who agrees with this? (laugh)
Girl 7: That’s a really good idea! I’ll bet 200 yen for Kuroko and Kagami for this.
Girl 8: I’ll bet 400 yen for Kise and Midorima...
Girl 9: I’m betting for both! (laugh)
Kagami charred the paper using electricity before throwing it out of the window. “Those girls are at it... again... What’s so good about basketball anyway?! I’d rather tinker with electricity...” Unfortunately, his words were heard by Kuroko and the others.
“Teleporting is really useful..” Kuroko was deep in thought.
“Hmm, haven’t tried out basketball yet,” Kise said.
“I’ll go with you,” Midorima said, his eyes on Kise.
“I hear someone talking at the back again...” The menacing voice came. Again. The teacher’s bulky frame towered over the 4 of them. He stared daggers at them. “NO LUNCHTIME FOR YOU!!” And they were all smacked in the head.
It was finally the esper abilities test, and since Kagami was a Level 5, he had to use the school’s swimming pool to measure his ability. Kuroko and others were elsewhere with the other classes.
Kuroko got to stand beside a red-haired boy.
Akashi Seijuurou, a Level 4 Aerodynamics user -- an ability to propel objects into the air using their hands. Rivals with Kuroko.
“Well, nice to see you here,” Akashi greeted, somehow polite.
“So I see you haven’t reached Level 5 yet,” Kuroko smirked, folding his arms.
“Heh. I bet my current level will beat Tokiwadai’s Railgun.”
“I don’t think so, look over there!” Kuroko pointed to the swimming pool. “Tokiwadai’s Railgun’s abilities are so powerful that they need to use a SWIMMING POOL to measure it.”
Akashi just stayed silent, fuming inside.
Meanwhile, at the swimming pool, Kagami was doing his signature attack --‘Railgun’. He tossed a coin into the air, and as soon as the coin fell back and touched his fingers, he released huge amounts of electricity, directing the coin into the pool. A huge burst of water splashed upwards, and finally cascaded back into it.
“Looks like you pass for this year,” one of the teachers-in-charge commented after seeing his results.
“Whew, that was easy,” Kagami said, wiping a sweat off from his forehead. Wonder how Kuroko is doing...
It was finally lunchtime -- and the ‘Infamous 4’ didn’t stay back, because they angered the teacher until he fainted. A blessing in disguise, maybe?
“I think I’ll go to the library today to do some research,” Kagami said.
“If that’s the case, I’ll go with--”
“DON’T COME!! Leave me in peace for a while, Kuroko!” Kagami pushed Kuroko away from himself.
“So Kise, what are you going to do today?” Midorima asked.
“Shirane, maybe I’ll just chat with you guys,” Kise replied. He stood up to throw a few food wrappers, but an unthinkable happened.
Kuroko, Kagami and Midorima held their laugh so bad that giggles could be heard. Midorima laughed the hardest though. “K-Kise... your pants... you forgot to zip them up this morning... PFFHAHAAAAAHAAAA!!” He finally burst out laughing his head off. At the same time, he was blushing a little.
The girls around Kise were either cursing him, covering their eyes in shock, or about to chase him to the end of the earth. He quickly pulled up his pants and apologised. But it was no use. He had already found himself running away from the girls with Midorima. “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! SOMEONE HELP MEEEEEEEEEE!!!!”
Kagami and Kuroko sweatdropped. “Sigh, Kise-kun as usual.”
Then Kuroko suddenly thought of something he hasn’t done for ages -- and he wants to do it. “Kagami-kun, tonight, shall we..?”
“What..?” Kagami asked the obvious. “NO WAY THAT’LL HAPPEN!” He blushed hard and electrified Kuroko, but he teleported just in time.
“Aww, but--” Kagami succeeded in electrifying him. Then, Kagami proceeded to the library.
He took out a few books related to electricity to revise his ability. Ah... there’s so much peace without Kuroko...
“What’s the Railgun doing here?” An annoying and irritating voice asked.
Kagami looked up. Aomine f***ing Daiki. What’s he doing here, ruining my mood?! “Oh, just to revise a little...” His eyes narrowed.
Aomine Daiki -- a Level 5 Mental Out user -- the ability to control minds. Arch-enemies with Kagami. Known as Mental Out. (Or King of Tokiwadai, although the title sounds really weird.)
Aomine grinned. He took out a stungun and brought it close to Kagami. As expected, his ‘electrical barrier’ instantly neutralised it. Kagami grunted.
“Your so-called ‘electrical barrier’ is annoying,” Aomine teased.
Kagami stood up, sparks of electricity coming out from his cold, hard fist. “Hey! If you’re here to fight, then--” Then he suddenly realised that all the students were facing him, about to fight.
“Sure, maybe you can defeat me, but how about a whole group of espers?”
“Grrrr,” Kagami bit his teeth and sat down. I want to kill him. So f***ing badly. The students returned to normal.
“I’ll take my leave then,” Aomine turned around. Kagami stared one million daggers at him.
Classes finally ended. Kagami found an excuse to leave the school, saying he had “classes” outside. In actual fact, he needed to take breather.
Meanwhile, at a nearby vending machine, a girl with very dark blue hair(the colour is close to black) tied in a ponytail. Her hair length reached her thighs.
Kamijou Mikarin -- the unlucky girl. Though Level 0, she managed the defeat the Level 5 Accelerator using her Imagine Breaker. Her catchphrase is “Fukou da!”.
She put a 10,000 yen note inside the vending machine, and pressed her desired drink’s button. But nothing came out below at the dispenser.
“Huh..?” Mikarin pressed the button repeatedly. Knowing that the vending machine was broken, she hung her head low in despair. “Fukou da!”
“Hey, if you’re not buying anything, get out of the way. Other people needs to replenish their fluids, you know?”
“...” Mikarin stayed silent. I’m sure I’ve heard that voice somewhere before.... A familiar figure pushed her out of the way. She looked up. And sure enough, it was someone she knew.
“Biri biri?!” She shouted in shock. What’s he doing here anyway..?
“I DO HAVE A NAME CALLED KAGAMI TAIGA, DAMMIT!” Kagami released huge bursts of voltage towards Mikarin.
“Woah, that’s dangerous!” Mikarin pushed out her right hand towards the electricity, using her Imagine Breaker to neutralise the attack. “And anyway, you do know that this vending machine here is broken, right?”
“Yeah, I know,” Kagami made a stance, like he was ready to fight or something. “But I know of a way that deals with this. The springs inside are loose, so if you kick them...” He skipped a little before swinging his right leg towards the vending machine. A can comes out of the dispenser. He picks it up, opens it and drinks almost half of it in a single gulp. “There. But the thing is, you can’t choose which drinks to come out. It’s random.”
Maybe it’s you boys who are doing all these that the vending machine is broken... Mikarin facepalmed internally.
Kagami made a guess. “It ate your money?” He gave a smirk that irritated her.
“Well.....” Mikarin looked away, hesitating to answer. She certainly did not want him to look down at her.
“How much did it eat?” Kagami asked, looking at Mikarin’s expression. He seemed to be gloating over her misfortune.
“.... 10,000 yen......” Mikarin looked down, feeling uneasy.
“WHAT? YOU GAVE IT A 10,000 YEN NOTE?” Kagami was about to burst out laughing.
Mikarin nodded.
“PFFFHAAAHAAAAHAAA!!! HOW DID YOU GIVE IT A 10,000 YEN?!! THIS IS SO HILARIOUS!!”
“STOP IT!!”
“Well, looks like I can help you get it back,” Kagami managed to stop laughing, although there was still a grin on his face. This caught Mikarin’s attention. He released his electricity, and soon the whole vending machine was engulfed in electricity. Several cans began to drop into the dispenser. “I wasn’t able to get your 10,000 yen note back, but these cans should worth more than 10,000 yen.”
Mikarin stared in shock, completely freezed. She immediately sprinted away.
Kagami picked up the cans and turned around. “Hey, where’s she?! Did she run away?!”
“Whew... that was close..” Mikarin heaved a sigh of relief as she sat down at a nearby park bench. “I don’t want to be his accomplice in the case of the broken vending machine.”
“Oi!! You forgot your drinks!” Kagami called out, running towards her, holding cans. Mikarin jumped to her feet. He sat down beside her and tossed a can to her. She catched it nicely.
“It’s... hot!” Mikarin lost grip of it, and luckily Kagami caught it before it dropped and spilled onto the ground.
“Apple cider, huh...” Kagami muttered to himself. “If you don’t want this, I’ll drink it.” He opened it and gulped it down. Mikarin grabbed a can of orange juice. Just as she was about to drink it, a voice interrupted.
“Kagami-kun, I thought you were having classes? I didn’t expect you to have a rendezvous here.”
Kagami freezed for a moment. Dang it, Kuroko! Why are you here?!
It was Kuroko, and he immediately noticed Mikarin. He felt a sting of jealousy. There’s a GIRL here?! She can’t be here to steal my Kagami-kun, can she?! “Well, I see there’s a new friend here. Let me introduce myself. I’m Kagami-kun’s trusted partner, Kuroko Tetsuya. Nice to meet you.”
“Uh... Nice to meet you too... I’m Kamijou Mikarin,” Mikarin introduced, feeling a bit confused about those 2. “You two are... best friends?”
“Not best friends. Lovers,” Kuroko emphasized.
“What are you talking about, Kuroko?! WE’RE NOT GAY!” Kagami protested, releasing electricity towards Kuroko. But he teleported quick onto the top of a street lamp pole.
“I can teleport,” Kuroko winked. “I’m a Level 4 Teleporter.”
“KUROKO!!” Kagami shouted angrily from below, with sparks of electricity surrounding him.
“We shall take our leave now,” Kuroko said as he teleported himself down. Then he held Kagami’s hand and teleported to somewhere else.
“Well... that is weird...” Mikarin was baffled. She noticed the cans. “Right, I gotta bring those home...”
She had finally reached home, feeling a little tired holding those cans of drinks. She sighed and open the door of her apartment.
“Okairi nasai,” a cold voice welcomed. It gave Mikarin a shock.
“A-A-ACCELERATOR?!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!!” Mikarin shouted. She doesn’t want to believe this.
Accelerator, one of the Level 5s of Academy City. Her specialties are changing the speed and vectors of an object. And yes, she can reverse blood flow.
Accelerator had messy white hair and uncut fringe that almost covered her eyes. “My apartment was stormed,” she gave Mikarin a pitiful look.
“Argh, again?” Mikarin facepalmed. “Those bastards. Haven’t they finished yet?!”
“My feuds with them will never end.”
Mikarin went inside. Suddenly, someone jumped to her, causing her to fall. “I-Index..?!”
“I’M HUNGRY!! Mikarin, you didn’t leave any lunch on the table for me!” Index pouted.
Index, the shota priest which has thousands, or millions, of grimoires inside his brain. Currently residing in Mikarin’s house.
“Didn’t I tell you that I’ll be late home today..?!” Mikarin facepalmed again. It sure wasn’t easy to live with Index. Moreover, now there’s an addition of Accelerator. “Fukou da!”
“Hurry!” Index hurried. “My stomach’s been growling non-stop.”
“.... Guess I’ll have to sacrifice tomorrow’s ingredients...” Mikarin muttered as she took out vegetables and meat from her refrigerator to make dinner, since it was already late afternoon. She took a glance at Accelerator and Index who were watching anime on TV. “YOU GUYS AREN’T FREELOADERS!” She shouted, pointing at them.
They didn’t respond.
“Argh! Fukou da!” Mikarin cursed.
Back at Tokiwadai Middle School, Kuroko kept nagging at Kagami, but Kagami just ignored them all. They were useless. They decided to have dinner in the cafeteria with Kise and Midorima.
The 4 of them met up and went to buy their food. Then, they sat down at an empty table.
“Does anyone notice that... no one’s around us... even though it’s a little crowded in here?” Kagami commented. The other 3 looked around. True enough, no one dared to go close to them by at least 3 metres.
There was an awkward silence.
“Maybe it’s because of our identity here...” Kise said haltingly.
“It’s good in some kind of way,” Midorima fixed his glasses.
“It’s always been like that. Didn’t you know, Kagami-kun?” Kuroko said.
Kagami facepalmed. I feel like I could die right now with these idiots.
“Anyway, Kise-kun, Midorima-kun, how did it go today lunch?” Kuroko asked.
“Please don’t remind me of that anymore,” Kise covered his face. I had a really bad time with the teachers.
Midorima had a grin, somehow. Kagami spotted it. Why do I have a feeling that Midorima’s the one who caused all this din?
It was nighttime, and the 4 of them went back to their dorms.
“I just read my horoscope for nighttime today,” Midorima grinned. “It says that I have to sleep with my friends.”
Kise gulped. “What..?! Midorimacchi?!”
“WHO READS HOROSCOPE FOR NIGHTTIME ANYWAY?!” Kagami shouted, releasing electricity. But before he could do that, Kuroko teleported himself and Kagami onto Kagami’s bed. “Let’s do as Midorima-kun says, Kagami-kun.” Kuroko smirked, almost giving a yandere or rape face.
“Let us join in the fun too, Kuroko, Kagami!” Midorima dragged Kise, and they both jumped onto Kagami’s bed. It was a little bit of a squeeze with 4 of them on the same bed. But they slept horizontally on the vertical bed, so there was enough space.
“Get... out of my bed..!” Kagami tried to scream for help. But Kuroko was already on him. He thought of the worst that could happen to him. Dang it! Kagami couldn’t help but blush a little, making his electricity weaker.
“I know your weakness, Kagami-kun,” Kuroko winked.
“Ohh! Nice show to watch here,” Midorima commented, giggling. He was really looking forward to this. “Shall we do this too, Kise?”
“OH MY GOD NOO!! MIDORIMACCHI!!” Kise covered his eyes. No, that can’t be happening!
“ARGHH NOOO!” Kagami screamed with Kuroko trying to muffle his voice.
It’s such a crazy night here.... Wonder what’s going to happen.
.... I didn’t expect this since I entered Tokiwadai.
The next morning, they were late again. By 59 minutes, this time round.
