Voices of the Colours

A/N: This is just a random short story that I thought of. I don't know if I want to develop it or not. But if I do, most likely, it'll be about art, friendship and romance.
Anyway, this story is about a girl who searches for a reason to paint(after an incident which causes her to lose 90% of her ability). She meets another boy(doesn't like to speak adults) who has the potential to become a great artist and decides to help him develop his ability, while the boy, in turn, helps her regain her ability.
Well this may be another cliched story, but it's a story that I can relate to the most.
I initially wrote this from the girl's point of view, but this time I decided to change it to the boy's point of view.

I wonder if I can hear the voices of the colours in time to come...
--------

The asphalt ground was still quite moist from the earlier shower. Some rays of sunlight peeked through the clouds. As the humid air was filling my lungs, a bead of sweat trickled down my forehead. In this type of weather, people are supposed to feel rejuvenated, but I guess there’s too much moisture in the air, huh? Nevertheless, I’m glad the rain had stopped. I’m delighted that I can take a nice, lovely stroll along the park.

Taking a few steps towards the kids’ playground, I suddenly felt some kind of warm feeling in my heart. Like, something magical could happen right now...

                        What could it be?

Thinking about the earlier weather, my mind seemed to have an answer of its own.

                        Yes, I’m sure, it’s a…

                        “Rainbow!”

One of the seven-year-old boys yelled out excitedly, pointing to the sky and gesturing to his friends. Tilting my head high up, my eyes searched the sky. The wind was chasing the heavy, grey clouds away, like the stage assistants moving props off the stage to prepare for the next scene in a theatre's play.

My intuition was correct. Indeed, a rainbow hung itself high up in the sky, proudly boasting its vibrant colours. I could almost see a bright smile appear.

Magic has happened; the amount of water droplets and sunlight was ample to create a happy and colourful rainbow.

I couldn’t help it but smile at the boy’s discovery.

For the first time in my life, I had seen a rainbow.

Who knew, that it’d be this heartwarming to see one with my own eyes? I mean, I had only seen and read about them in books.

I walked up to that boy, who was waving his arms excitedly and telling his friends that he found a rainbow. He didn’t even notice me. When the distance between us was a mere ten centimeters, I squatted down(due to our height difference). And lightly, I tapped his shoulder.

He turned around, eyes filled with sparkles. Apparently, “stranger danger” wasn’t in his dictionary. Well, I’m not going to kidnap him or anything. I’m just his senior by six years.

In my friendliest voice as possible, I asked, “Hey, do you want to know the magic of rainbows?”

“Woah! I never knew rainbows had magic! Tell me more!”

The sparkles in his eyes illuminated even more. Before I could even speak, he commanded his friends to sit down to ‘listen to this guy talk about magic’(and they obeyed). Kids…it must be fun being a kid…

I wasn’t used to speaking to people, but since my audience was just children, I cleared my throat to signal the start of my speech.

“Okay, so, a rainbow contains seven different colours.”

                        They nodded in agreement.

“Each and every one of them sings in perfect harmony, thus perfecting a phenomenon called a ‘rainbow’. The voices of the colours make everyone, especially you guys,” I paused and pointed to their astonished faces, “feel excitement, joy and happiness. That’s the magic.”

There was a silence for a few seconds. I inhaled deeply.

Then, they all stood up and cheered for me, “Yeah!”

Heaving a sigh of relief, I was very glad that they didn’t deny my statements. They are kids, after all. And deep down in my heart, I believe, that I’m the same age as them, together with the same mindset and behaviour. I just keep it locked tightly inside me. Hopefully, one day, someone is able to unlock it…

Now, as I (and everyone else) have learnt science in school, I know this isn’t how a rainbow is created. But let’s ignore technical terms. Instead, focus on your imagination.

                        Look at the rainbow.

                        Can you hear their voices?
