"Sorry! Milord is missing!" The man apologised cheekily as he ran impulsely through the road. Fearing something bad might happen, Misaka hurled herself towards the man as a blaring honk sound was heard. (A/N: Milord is Yato's friends' pet cat.)
Misaka felt something awaken inside her -- something strong and powerful that will change her whole life.
Then, everything went pitch black.
....
"Hey... wake up!! Wake up!!" a voice reverberated in Misaka's mind. Oblivious of the circumstances, she opened her eyes groggily.
"...?" Misaka moaned as she propped herself up slowly. She was on middle of the road, unscathed from the accident that had happened earlier.
What... happened to me? Misaka gasped in horror as she saw a few sparks of electricity in her hand. Strangely, she didn't feel any pain.
"Look, you didn't need to do that. I'm a god," The man said. "My name's Yato, a god of calamity!" He tried to lift spirits up by using a cheery tone.
"What did you do to me?!!" Misaka yelled, demanding an answer. A crowd had been formed around them. Yato immediately teleported themselves to a deserted forested area. As a result, it left the crowd in shock, wondering where they had gone.
"Answer!" Misaka demanded fiercely like a fierce dog. The electric waves coming from Misaka threatened Yato.
"U-Uh.. well... I have no idea what happened either! Something awoke inside you, that's why!" Yato tried to brush the topic off. He had no idea why the girl was willing to save him. "W-Well, if you insist, I guess I'll have to help you... but..." He turned around, then turned back again. He opened his palm and fingers wide, showing a sign of '5'.
"W-Wha--?? 5000 yen?!!" Misaka shouted in disbelief, raising her eyebrows. "That's daylight robbery!"
"Nope, 5 yen. We all know that we give 5 yen to the gods when praying, right?" Yato grinned to himself. Well, I need money to build a shrine...
"... ugh, fine," Misaka finally relented, handing a 5-yen coin to Yato.
"Alright! Your wish will be granted!" Yato flipped the coin up and winked. The coin dropped inside a green, transparent bottle, which was three-quarters filled with 5-yen coins. "But first, I need a shinki to fight so I can grant your wish. So, bye for now!" He escaped by teleporting.
"Wa--Waaiiittt!!" Misaka yelled. "Goddamit, when I find you you're gonna be so dead!" Looking at the lushes of greenery around her, she began to flinch. Damn it. I think I'm lost...
"Screw you Yatogamiiiiii!!!!"

"Ugh, I need a shinki! Damn it!" Yato cursed as he sprinted away from a Phantom. A Phantom was a type of 'monster' that gods needed to deal with to keep peace between the mortal world and the god world. And now, it's chasing Yato to no end.
Suddenly, Yato's eyes, which were like a hawk's, spotted a drifting lost soul. He immediately ran to it and ranted a few chantings.
Lonely soul, I will hereby name you 'Yukine'. Come on forth and be my shinki!
Yato immediately wrote the word 'yuki' (in kanji) in the air, and it was embedded onto the soul. A huge and bright aura engulfed them.
"SEKKI!" Yato yelled proudly as the soul turned into a very long and razor-sharp silver sword that would send shivers down any enemies' spines. The aura then disappeared.
"Alright Yukine, you know what to do?" Yato talked to his newfound shinki, Yukine. Sensing a sense of approval, Yato poised for a attack as the Phantom charged towards them.
Yato immediately striked a blow at the Phantom's head, and it was cut cleanly. "Nice strike, Yukine!"
The phantom then disappeared as it broke into smithereens.
"Yossha, Yukine!" Yato cheered. Hmm, Yukine's strength grows really fast!
Yukine reverted back to his human form, although it's still a soul. "Hmm, so from now on, I'm your shinki?"
"Yeah! Hope we have a good teamwork together!"

The next day, Misaka went to her school(Otogi High School) as per normal. Everyone had found out that she had gained electricity super powers and they stayed far away from her.
"Ugh, I hope this goes away soon..." Misaka sulked.
Then, to her horror, she spotted Yato -- and another shorter boy -- in her classroom.
"Y-YATOGAMI?!!" Misaka yelled deafeningly due to her shock. "You haven't cured my electricity powers yet!!"
"I need time!" Yato argued back. "Besides, I just got a new shinki. His name is Yukine. And you haven't told me your name yet."
"It's Misaka Mikoto, I'm not gonna repeat that again," Misaka used her hand to support her head on her table.
"Hi Mikoto-san, I'm Yukine..." Yukine said shyly, hiding behind Yato, although he's a boy. "I'm Yato's shinki, although I kind of hate being his shinki. His hands are always sweaty, and we can only find food in the rubbish dumps!"
"Ehhh?!! Don't be so mean, Yukine~!" Yato whined.
"Hah, as expected from this kind of guy," Misaka said.
"Class is starting! Please take your seats! Misaka Mikoto, Yato, Yukine, Suzumiya-sensei needs to see you now."
